Behind the Scenes: The Magic of Music Through a Volunteer's Eyes

ree

In September, Gen Bridgeway had the privilege of presenting another recital at a local senior living center in Sunnyvale, California. The feedback from the seniors was heartwarming; they felt deeply touched by the musical endeavor and eagerly anticipate the next melody-filled afternoon. Our volunteers performed a variety of pieces, ranging from Bach Preludes to Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Today, we step into a conversation with Elise Chung, a fresh-faced volunteer, to capture her reflections.

Can you tell us a little bit about your musical journey?

I started playing the piano when I was five. My parents, especially my mom, have been consistent supporters throughout my musical journey.

Why did you choose to volunteer with Gen Bridgeway?

It was a valuable opportunity to connect with the elderly through music. Music has a unique way of bridging gaps and fostering connections. I believe that even simple gestures, like sharing a song, can have a profound impact and create cherished memories for others.

Which piece did you perform at the recital, and what influenced your selection?

I performed the third movement of Sonata in E major. I chose it because I was already practicing it and truly enjoyed its composition.

How did you feel while performing?

Initially, I was a bit nervous. However, I soon recognized that the performance calls us to give our best when serving others rather than achieving perfection. I focused instead on cherishing the moment.

What stood out as the highlight of the recital?

The most memorable moment for me was towards the end when we sang the hymns.

Which moments from the recital were particularly memorable for you?

The moment that truly resonated with me was seeing the elderly arrive punctually, their eagerness evident as they waited for the performance to begin.

How has your experience volunteering with Gen Bridgeway influenced your view on relationships across generations?

No matter the age, people can always connect together.

Would you consider performing again? Why?

Yes, I'd definitely perform again; it was both enjoyable and moving.

In reflecting upon our journey, we feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. To have the privilege of sharing the universal joy of music with individuals spanning various age groups has been nothing short of a blessing. It's a beautiful reminder of how melodies can seamlessly bridge generations, evoking emotions and forging connections that transcend age. Our hearts are full of appreciation, and we look forward to many more moments of musical communion.
